For those who haven't been to an Informal Universal Worship before, here's a brief sketch of how it goes:
We gather in a circle, attune in a short silence, do an invocation
One person reads the opening prayer
We do readings from scriptures or respected books of six different faith traditions. For example: Hindu, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, Islam. We may choose alternatives, but the readings are done in a generally accepted historical order. Sometimes the readings may be modern commentaries or poetry and even song
Mid-service prayer
Short silence, reading from Sufi Inayat Khan
The worship leader gives a short address on the topic of the worship, or comments on the readings, or reads something else
Silence, musical offering, recorded or live
Closing prayer
Anyone who attends may read a prayer or reading. The prayers and readings are pre-selected; if you come early enough you can suggest an alternative reading on the theme of the worship, which the worship leader may use.
We open the door 15-30 minutes early. We begin with an opening silence; if you arrive after that please join us in silence. Any questions, please call...
